This portrait of Emmanuel Muliett was taken in 1920 just before he left his native Malta for Detroit. Emmanuel, husband of Francesca and father to Lawrence, was an electrican at the Royal Dockyards during World War I. He, like thousands of other Maltese, was laid off at the conclusion of of the war. With a trade in his back pocket, he left for Detroit to work at General Motors, also as an electrican. He would be joined five years after his arrival by his wife and child. Emmanuel would never return to Malta, nor see his parents again.
